With nearly four decades of acting experience, Walsh reveals there have been numerous projects he believed would be impactful, only for them to fade into obscurity. He initially assumed “Heated Rivalry” would follow a similar path.
Though he thought the show would be well-made, Walsh—now 62—expected its gay romance theme would limit its appeal to a niche audience. “Not because I’m narrow-minded,” he clarifies, “but because I know that a good portion of the country is.” The overwhelming positive reception surprised him, restoring his faith in societal progress: “It makes me realize we seem backward at times, but there’s a lot more going on in this country.”
The series, adapted from the “Game Changers” book series, follows rival hockey players Shane Hollander (Hudson Williams) and Ilya Rozanov (Connor Storrie) as they navigate a secret romance. Walsh attributes the show’s resonance to its boldness and universal message of love. Creator Jacob Tierney encouraged him to approach his role with compassion, particularly in scenes where Shane reveals his sexuality.
Walsh reflects on Tierney’s guidance: “The wheels are spinning. You have to absorb this. But there’s a kindness and a decency when this lands.” He believes this balance of audacity and heartfelt storytelling creates the show’s feel-good essence, resonating far beyond expectations.
