The controversy began following the death of Kirk, the 31-year-old founder of Turning Point USA, who was fatally shot during a speaking engagement at Utah Valley University on September 10. Chenoweth responded to the news on social media, expressing her heartbreak for Kirk’s wife and two children. While she noted that she did not always agree with his views, she stated that she appreciated some of his perspectives and believed he was in heaven. She also took to Instagram Stories to condemn the shooting as a “senseless and disgusting act.”
Her tribute sparked immediate backlash from the public, particularly from the LGBTQ+ community, which forms a significant portion of her fan base. Critics pointed out Kirk’s history of opposing same-sex marriage and transgender rights.
Shortly after the initial outcry, a tearful Chenoweth addressed the situation during a conversation with NY1’s Frank DiLella. She explained that her response was a “human moment” triggered by seeing the graphic footage of the shooting and that it pained her to know she had hurt people. She emphasized that while she is a woman of faith, she remains a staunch ally of the LGBTQ+ community, maintaining that her religious beliefs and her advocacy have always coexisted.
