Martin Short shared a humorous mishap from Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco’s wedding during an appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live.” The actor, who stars with Gomez in “Only Murders in the Building,” admitted to accidentally cutting into the couple’s wedding cake before they had the chance to do so themselves.

Short explained that he and fellow cast members, including Steve Martin and Paul Rudd, were seated in a section of the Santa Barbara reception that featured a small cake. Assuming each area had its own dessert, he decided to serve Steve Martin a slice as he prepared to leave. Armed with a fork, Short cut into the cake, only to realize it was the main wedding cake, not meant to be presented for another hour. The group gasped in shock, with Martin reportedly “stunned” by the blunder.

Panicking, Short attempted to smooth the damage with his fork but knew it was a mistake. He even joked about fleeing the scene with Rudd. Instead, they stayed and watched as the wedding coordinator urgently summoned the chef, who performed what Short called “surgery” on the cake. Though repaired, the dessert bore slight visible marks from the incident.

Despite efforts to keep the gaffe from Gomez, she soon learned about it and lightheartedly confronted Short as he departed, saying, “Hey, Marty! I heard you tried to eat my cake!” Photos later revealed the couple posing with the subtly altered cake.

Short praised the wedding as “perfect” and “beautiful,” emphasizing Gomez and Blanco’s compatibility. He described Gomez as “an extra child of mine” and applauded Blanco as “the greatest guy,” noting their strong connection. The pair, who began dating in 2023 and announced their engagement later that year, have discussed starting a family through surrogacy or adoption due to Gomez’s lupus-related health considerations.
