According to LAPD records obtained by the Daily Mail, authorities were dispatched to the Brentwood residence of Rob and Michele Singer Reiner at least six times over the last decade. Logs indicate that police visited the home in 2013, 2014, 2017, twice in 2019, and finally on December 14—the day the couple was murdered. The calls included welfare checks and a 2017 investigation into a domestic violence battery, as well as a 2019 mental health check regarding a male individual.
The couple was discovered stabbed to death by their 28-year-old daughter, Romy. Their son, 32-year-old Nick Reiner, was subsequently arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder.
Nick has a well-documented history of substance abuse and mental health struggles. In past interviews, he described a turbulent youth spent in and out of rehabilitation centers and periods of homelessness. He even co-authored a semi-autobiographical film, “Being Charlie,” centered on his experiences with addiction. Despite his father stating in a September NPR interview that Nick had been sober for six years, recent reports suggest his stability had deteriorated.
Sources indicate that Nick had recently been diagnosed with schizophrenia. TMZ reported that a change in his psychiatric medication approximately a month before the incident may have caused him to become increasingly erratic and dangerous. Death certificates confirm that both Rob and Michele died rapidly from multiple knife wounds. Nick Reiner is scheduled for arraignment on January 7.
