In a recent installment of the “GURU” interview series, cultural icon Mickey Boardman met with footwear mogul Steve Madden at his expansive headquarters in Queens to discuss his career, his inspirations, and his relentless drive to create the ultimate shoe.
Madden reflects on his beginnings not as a designer, but as a “producer” of style. He likens his role to that of legendary film producer David O. Selznick, who famously navigated the chaotic production of Gone with the Wind. Madden explains that he isn’t just a writer or an actor in the fashion world; he is the visionary pulling the strings to build a brand identity that bridges entertainment and commerce.
This drive started long before he was a household name. Madden recounts failing to secure early funding from industry figures like Kenneth Cole, eventually launching his business with limited resources and selling shoes out of the trunk of his car. His break came from a deep understanding of the market, honed by years of working in shoe stores and factories during the 1980s. By 1993, he opened his first boutique on Broadway, eventually launching “The Slinky”—a platform slide that remains in production thirty years later.
Today, Madden’s empire is approaching $3 billion in value, recently expanding through the acquisition of the brand Kurt Geiger. Despite the company’s massive scale and his personal wealth, Madden remains grounded, noting that he still views himself as a regular guy who has experienced both the pinnacle of success and the “darkness” of rock bottom. He speaks candidly about his time in prison two decades ago, describing it as a painful but transformative experience that provided him with an invaluable perspective on survival and resilience.
Adapting to the modern era, Madden acknowledges that the industry has shifted significantly toward the internet and social media influencers. While he admits to being somewhat overwhelmed by the pace of platforms like TikTok, he recognizes their power; a single post from the right influencer can sell out a product instantly.
Even after decades in the business, Madden’s primary ambition remains remarkably focused. While he wears the same favorite boots for years, he is still chasing the creative “heaven” of producing a season of entirely perfect footwear. For the “Shoe King of New York,” the quest for the flawless collection is far from over.
