A fatal structural failure occurred in Lower Manhattan on Tuesday afternoon when a parking garage at 35 Ann Street collapsed, resulting in one death and five injuries. The disaster, which saw the roof and multiple floors cave in, was captured in several harrowing videos shared across social media.
All victims were employees working inside the facility at the time of the collapse. According to FDNY Chief John Esposito, four individuals were hospitalized, while one worker declined medical treatment on-site. The neighboring Pace University was also evacuated as a precaution.
Rescue operations faced significant challenges due to the building’s volatility. Firefighters were initially sent inside to search for survivors but were pulled back when the structure was deemed “completely unstable.” To safely survey the wreckage, the FDNY deployed advanced technology, including robotic dogs and drones, to navigate the interior and capture footage of the concrete slabs that had crushed vehicles below.
Mayor Eric Adams confirmed the use of these robotics, emphasizing the danger posed to human rescue teams. While the New York Police Department stated there is currently no evidence of foul play, a full investigation into the structural failure is underway. Officials noted that there were no active safety violations on record for the property prior to the incident.
