Rob Reiner and his daughter Romy shared an exceptionally close relationship, which made his sudden loss even more devastating. Their bond was tragically severed when Romy discovered her father and mother, Michele Singer Reiner, fatally stabbed in their Los Angeles home on December 14. Shortly after, her brother Nick was arrested and charged with their murders.
This weekend marks Romy’s 28th birthday—her first without her father. She had often referred to him as her “best friend,” a sentiment she expressed publicly in a 2022 birthday tribute on Instagram. Alongside nostalgic photos, she wrote, “Happy birthday to my other best friend.” On Father’s Day last year, she highlighted their effortless connection: “Happy Father’s Day to the man I could talk to forever or sit with in silence and feel perfectly content.”
Just weeks before the tragedy, Romy and Rob enjoyed a tropical family vacation, captured in a cheerful November social media post showing them swimming together. Her Instagram also featured candid moments, like a playful video where she trimmed his hair while jokingly seeking career advice. In another clip, Rob humorously shared his “rules of aging,” sparking a lighthearted father-daughter banter.
Beyond their emotional closeness, Romy lived across the street from her parents, emphasizing their tight-knit dynamic. Following the murders, she and her brother Jake released a joint statement mourning their parents as “more than just parents—they were our best friends.” They requested privacy amid overwhelming public support and confirmed plans for a future memorial service.
As they grieve, Romy and Jake have leaned on Michele’s sisters and their wider community for support. A source described them as “numb” but surrounded by compassion from loved ones. The couple was cremated, with their remains entrusted to Jake as their children navigate this profound loss.
