Savannah Guthrie opened up about her deep feelings of failure following her difficult 2009 divorce from ex-husband Mark Orchard, a former BBC journalist. During the premiere of Hoda Kotb’s YouTube series “Joy Rides,” the 54-year-old journalist shared that her divorce left her heartbroken as she navigated a new chapter in her career at NBC.
“I was in my 30s. I felt old, but I now see that I was pretty young, and I was sad about it,” Guthrie reflected. “I was trying really hard to make my little dream come true while other dreams were falling apart.” She admitted the experience forced her to “dig deep” and confront feelings of inadequacy, stating, “I felt like a failure.”
Guthrie credits her faith with helping her heal, revealing she had an epiphany: “I realized I didn’t have to be perfect to be loved by God. I didn’t even have to be close because I was definitely a failure.” This realization, she explained, allowed her to feel “loved and carried by God,” marking a pivotal moment in her life.
Earlier, on Monica Lewinsky’s “Reclaiming” podcast in July 2025, Guthrie described the divorce as “horrible and sad” and shared it took “years to recover,” though she declined to elaborate further. She married Orchard in 2005 after meeting during the Michael Jackson trial, but the four-year marriage ended without children.
Guthrie later found happiness with political advisor Michael Feldman, marrying him in 2014. The couple shares two children, daughter Vale, 11, and son Charley, 9, and celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary in May 2024.
